A large 7.9-magnitude earthquake struck near Nepal’s capital Kathmandu on Saturday, according to the U.S. Geological Survey, which said it expected heavy damage in the mountainous Central Asian country.

While there was no immediate official word on casualties, locals reported extensive damage.
